Crescând pe străzile violente din Maryhill, un cartier rău-famat din Glasgow, Scoţia, Soom T pe numele său adevărat Sumati Bhardwaj a asistat în tinereţea sa la multe nedreptăţi sociale. Acesta este motivul principal pentru care artista de origine indiano-scoţiană înfiinţa la frageda vârstă de cinsprezece ani grupul Y Network, o mişcare politică formată din tineri din cartierele Glasgow-ului. Grupul îşi propunea să trateze direct cu autorităţile locale probleme diverse cum ar fi cele sociale, cele legate de sistemul de învăţământ, de sistemul sanitar sau cele ce ţin de mediul înconjurător. După câţiva ani de încercări, Soom T se vede nevoită să renunţe la acest proiect, întrucât în acest sistem politic atât de inflexibil şi convenţional a schimba destine în bine pare o misiune imposibilă.
Soom T este astfel nevoită să scoată din mânecă un plan B, un plan în care face apel la muzică pentru a transmite tinerilor mesajul său politic şi social.
Perioada dintre anii 1997 şi 2000 o petrece în preajma dezvoltării culturii de tip underground din Scoţia, iar acest lucru înseamnă printre altele şi multe călători prin ţară alături de petrecerile de tip soundsystem. Experimentează diverse genuri muzicale de la hip-hop la tehno şi de la folk la reggae, iar acest lucru o face să progreseze enorm, ajungând astăzi să posede o paletă variată de stiluri în care-şi poate picta mesajele sale. A fost îndeajuns să-şi demonstreze nemărginitul talent pentru a atrage atenţia altor artişti, iar colaborările variate avute în ultimii zece ani (despre care vom povesti puţin mai jos), depun mărturie în acest sens.
Soom T este caracterizată de un sound distinctiv inimitabil, fiind o persoană veselă şi excentrică, iar piesele sale conţin preponderent mesaj politico-socialo-spiritual. Ascultând piesele sale realizăm că este influenţată de o serie de artişti celebri ca Rage Against The Machine, Queen, Christie Moore sau Pink Floyd, iar stilul său a fost clădit şi pe temeliile hip-hopului din anii ’80 sau ale muzicii electro, rave sau punk din anii ’90 plus stilul Hindi Ghazals din anii ’50 şi cel Punjabi Bhangra.
A participat la diferite sesiuni live pentru BBC, dar şi pentru alte radio-uri europene. Poate de aceea a şi strâns până acum mai multe premii, cele mai importante dintre ele fiind BBC Fame Academy Bursary Award (2005) şi PRS Foop Award (2005).
Revenind la discografie, aşa cum v-am promis, trebuie spus că Soom T lansează primul material oficial, Keep Life Right, în 2003 alături de Bus, un duo de producţie german compus din Daniel Meteo & Tom Thiel.
În 2004 cele două părţi continuă conlucrarea şi apare pe piaţă Diamond EP, format din patru piese, de pe care putem asculta şi noi mai jos Diamond In The Rough.

Pentru indiano-scoţiancă, 2004 reprezintă anul în care-şi extinde tentaculele muzicale, aşa că înregistrăm şi colaborările cu T.Raumschmiere pe A Million Brothers (Blah Blah Blah) şi cu DJ Maxximus pe Reason pentru care avem şi clip şi în care putem observa ca fapt divers că Soom T a fost cândva şi blondă, la propriu 🙂 După câte se poate auzi ne dăm seama că genul principal preferat de artistă pe atunci este hip-hopul.

2005 aduce şi primul album al lui Soom T, Feelin Dank’, realizat în colaborare cu aceiaşi Bus, iar stilul ei începe uşor dar sigur să capete acea nuanţă pe care o cunoaştem noi astăzi. Puteţi asculta The Answer pentru a vă convinge singuri de acest lucru.

Nu putem continua trecând peste single-ul What Is Life înregistrat pe ritmuri scoţiene în 2007 alături de compatriul ei King Creosote aka Kenny Anderson.

2009 reprezintă un an important pentru Soom T care începe să colaboreze cu Disrupt, fondatorul casei de discuri Jahtari şi unul dintre principalii promoteri ai stilului digital laptop reggae (muzică reggae sau dub produsă pe instrumentale create doar cu ajutorul computerului). Lansează împreună EP-ul Dirty Money de pe care vă propun piesa cu acelaşi nume şi Survivor.

De asemenea, în acelaşi an putem nota şi colaborarea cu Maffi Promotions pe Flying High. În concluzie, acesta este anul în care Soom T începe să colaboreze preponderent cu case de discuri asociate genului reggae, iar direcţia în care şi-a îndreptat paşii este cu siguranţă cea corectă.

Cum înţelegerea cu Disrupt a mers de minune, anul 2010 a adus în prim-planul fanilor genului digital laptop reggae şi primul album important din cariera lui Soom T: Ode To A Carrot. Cele cinsprezece track-uri pe care le vom regăsi aici par născute la intersecţia stilului clasic Jahtari cu cel clasic Mungo’s Hi Fi. Soom T ne cântă despre pace, justiţie sau karma, dar subiectul omniprezent este legat de marijuana. Materialul poate fi descris ca fiind vioi, amuzant, drăguţ, relaxant, nu prea serios şi bineînţeles weed related, iar bass-ul folosit este greu de tot.

În acelaşi 2010 Soom T apare pe EP-ul Bass Shelter lansat tot la Jahtari alături de Cha Cha, o artistă de origine chineză din Guizhou. Put It In Your Pocket face parte de pe acest material.

Trio-ul britanic Potenz, Solo Banton (ce va fi şi el prezent la Păuleşti cu ocazia festivalului Subsonic) şi Soom T apar împreună pe materialul numit Mission.

În 2011 la casa de discuri franceză Livity Reggae este relansat hit-ul Pull It Up, iar pentru Reality Shock Family (label-ul lui Kris Kemist) lansează Kingdom Rise.

Anul acesta avem ocazia să-i admirăm şi noi originalitatea şi energia cu ocazia festivalului Subsonic.

Growing up on the violent streets in Maryhill, an ill-famed neighbourhood in Glasgow, Scotland, Soom T ( real name being Sumati Bhardwaj) – witnessed a lot of social unjustices during his youth. This is the main reason why the indian-scotish artist, when she was only fifteen, was forming the Y Network group, a political movement started by youngsters from Glasgow‘s neighbourhoods. The group was meant to deal directly with the local authorities and tackle various issues such as the social ones, the one regarding the educational system, the health system or the problems on the environment. After a couple of years of attempts, Soom T felt she had to give up this project as in this rigid and formal system the idea of changing destinies for better seems and impossible mission.
Soom T is thus constrained to refer to a plan B, by chosing music to deliver to the youth her social or political message.
The period between 1997 and 2000 was spent by her around developping the underground culture in Scotland, this meaning, among others, a lot of travels in the country and soundsystem type of parties. Experiencing several musical genres – from hip-hop to tehno and from folk to reggae – made her progress massively, making her have today a great range of styles to build her messages with. It seems to have been enough for her to prove her endless talent and get the attention of other artists, and her various collaborations in the last ten years (that we will talk about a bit later) are proof of this statement.
Soom T is defined by a distinctive and incomparable sound, being a joyful and excentric person, and her tracks mostly contain a socio-political and spiritual message. Listening to her tracks we realize she is influenced by famous artists such as Rage Against The Machine, Queen, Christie Moore or Pink Floyd, and her style was also built on the grounds of the 80’s hip-hopului of the 90’s electro, rave or punk music, added to the 50’s Hindi Ghazals style and the Punjabi Bhangra.
She participated to various live sessions for BBC, but also for other European radio stations. Maybe this is one of the reasons why she collected many awards so far, the most important of them being BBC Fame Academy Bursary Award (2005) and PRS Foop Award (2005).
Coming back to the discography, as we promised, it’s a must saying that Soom T releases her very first official record, Keep Life Right, in 2003 together with Bus, a German production duo made up of Daniel Meteo & Tom Thiel.
In 2004 the two parts continue the collaboration and the Diamond EP, is released, made up of four tracks, out of which we can listen below to Diamond In The Rough.

For the indian-scotish girl, 2004 is the year when she extends her musical tentacles, so we also note her collabs with T.Raumschmiere on A Million Brothers (Blah Blah Blah) and with DJ Maxximus on Reason in which we can notice as a matter of fact that Soom T was blonde too sometime, for real. By listening to this we realize that the artist then prefered mainly the hip-hop.

2009 is an important year for Soom T who starts to collaborate with Disrupt, the founder of the record label Jahtari and one of the main promoters of the digital laptop reggae style ( reggae or dub music produced on instrumentals created only by a computer).They release together the Dirty Money EP on which we propose the track with the same title and also Survivor.

Moreover, in the same year we could note the collab with Maffi Promotions on Flying High. In conclusion, this is the year when Soom T starts to collab especially with record labels associated to the reggae genre, and the direction she headed her steps to is surely the right one.

As the deal with Disrupt went perfectly, 2010 brought in the the digital laptop reggae‘s fans close-up the first important album in Soom T’s career: Ode To A Carrot.The fifteen tracks we find here seem born at the junction of the classic Jahtari with the classic Mungo’s Hi Fi. Soom T sings about peace, justice or karma, but the ubiquitous subject is related to marijuana. The record can be described as animated, funny, cute, relaxing, not very formal and of course weed related, and the bass used is really heavy.

The British trio Potenz, Solo Banton (who will also be present at Păuleşti with the occasion of the Subsonic festival) ) and Soom T are featured together on the record called Mission.
