Webcam Hi-Fi reprezintă numele unuia dintre cele mai apreciate proiecte roots & dub din Franţa. Fredread este persoana care stă în spatele acestui măreţ proiect, iar noi am avut şansa să-i luăm un interviu, care sună cam aşa:
1. Cum a fost 2012 pentru Webcam Hi Fi? A fost un an reuşit?
Da. Per total, nu ne putem plânge. 2012 a fost un an bun cu adevărat. Am lansat mult lăudatul album Feeding My Faith şi un site nou. Am prestat în întreaga lume. Au fost câteva concerte şi sesiuni chiar reuşite alături de Israel Vibration, Digitron Sound System, The Banyans, Bam Salute… Dub-ul şi muzica reggae sunt viaţa mea.
2. De ce este acest gen, numit “muzică reggae”, atât de special? Ce te face să-i dedici viaţa?
Reggae este singurul gen muzical care oferă un mesaj foarte pătrunzător.
Aceste elemente fac parte din istoria reggae: Emperor Haile Selassie, N’Krummah în Ghana, sclavie, prigoană, viaţa din ghetouri, sărăcie, Marcus Garvey, Mortimer Planno, Prophet Gad, Robert Nesta Marley, din Africa până în Indiile de Vest.
Vorbim despre temelii. Muzica reggae presupune ceva mai mult decât bună dispoziţie.
Acest gen muzical implică vibraţie şi atitudine pozitivă, iubire, respect de sine, respectul pentru ceilalţi şi pentru natură, reuşita prin propriile forţe, independenţă, conştiinţă, să înveţi câte ceva zi de zi, cunoştinţe, educaţie, altruism, credinţă, hrană sănătoasă, mod de viaţă, lupta cu nedreptăţile…
Muzica reggae a fost dintotdeauna în sufletul meu, cu toate că viaţa reprezintă un drum greu de parcurs. A fost ca o demonstraţie pentru mine. Am mers de multe ori în Africa– tatăl meu a muncit cincisprezece ani acolo. Mama obişnuia să spună că e un fel de moştenire. Am fost în Jamaica, în Etiopia… Mi-am construit singur casa din lemn pe care o am în sud-vestul Franţei – acolo am şi studioul de înregistrări – cultiv legume şi strâng apă de ploaie pe acoperiş ca să le ud; încălzirea se face pe bază de lemne. Uneori merg cu bicicleta pe munte, mă plimb prin pădure sau iau masa alături de ai mei. Am ales acest mod de viaţă şi sunt mulţumit. A fost opţiunea mea.
Dorm bine şi mă simt în concordanţă cu ceea ce spun la microfon, pe durata sesiunilor muzicale sau în discuţiile cu fraţii mei. Cu toate că nu mai sunt un tinerel, mă simt mai încrezător cu fiecare an ce trece şi mă gândesc la ce am realizat în viaţă; eşti actorul vieţii tale şi încearcă să nu te dai bătut. “Echilibru”, precum în piesa cu acelaşi nume produsă de mine, a veteranului englez Tena Stelin.
Este vorba despre puternice vibraţii “rasta roots”.
3. Cum de ai devenit rastafarian? Este un dar pe care l-ai primit la naştere?
Cu fiecare zi ce a trecut, după cum ţi-am spus. Drumurile noastre s-au intersectat. Rasta şi cu mine. Nu eu am decis acest lucru. Nu trăiesc după anumite principii. Modul meu de viaţă şi credinţa Rasta au câteva puncte comune. E vorba despre sensibilitate şi spiritualitate. Încercarea de a găsi propriul drum. Să te simţi împlinit când te trezeşti dimineaţa.
4. De când faci muzică? Ai fost dintotdeauna în Webcam Hi Fi sau ai făcut parte şi din alte trupe sau proiecte, în cariera ta?
În muzică sunt de peste 25 de ani. Am cântat cu numeroase formaţii şi am fost implicat în multe alte diferite proiecte.
Trupa The Clash a reprezentat o revelaţie pentru mine. La sfârşitul anilor ’70 şi începutul anilor ’80, în Anglia perioadei punk, rock-ul şi muzica reggae s-au unit împotriva rasismului şi a problemelor sociale .Ţara era condusă de Margaret Tatcher. Muzica “roots rock reggae” era pe bune, cum putem observa din piesele lui Bob Marley.
Aswad, Steel Pulse, Misty In Roots, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, Ruts DC, Don Letts… The Clash colaborau cu Mickey Dread sau Lee Perry.
Pe de altă parte, o formaţie pe nume Bad Brains cânta “hardcore” şi reggae cu puternice influenţe rasta.
Nu am studii de specialitate. Eu sunt un muzician autodidact şi sunetist. Nu mă pricep la vreun instrument. Ştiu să cânt puţin la tobe, chitară, instrumente de percuţie şi clape, dar meseria mea este cea de sunetist. Am început să fac asta de la optsprezece ani. Pe atunci nu existau şcoli unde să înveţi meseria aceasta.
Aşa că mi-am cumpărat un mixer audio cu patru căi şi două microfoane. Eram singurul din zonă care avea o astfel de consolă. Munceam din greu ca să înregistrez pentru formaţiile locale.
Îmi plac cu adevărat dub-ul şi reggae, dar în special muzica dub deoarece reprezintă ceva deosebit pentru un sunetist. King Jammy, Channel One Studio, Roots Radics, Steven Stanley, Sly & Robbie, Soljie Hamilton, Dennis Bovell, Lloyd Bullwackies Barnes sunt câteva din numele care m-au influenţat.
Desigur, sunt mult mai mulţi cei pe care nu i-am pomenit! Inginerii de sunet erau consideraţi a fi muzicieni care fac dub iar instrumentele lor erau mixerele audio. Am atribuit un stil propriu acestei activităţi. Munca mea este un fel de tribut adus muzicii reggae şi dub din anii ’70-’80, perioada mea preferată. Un omagiu personal pentru acei oameni.
5. Ai simţit vreodată “energia oamenilor” în timpul unui concert?
Da. E foarte important să ai în faţă mase de oameni cărora să le împărtăşeşti pasiunea. Avem nevoie de reacţie, de energie.
Îmi place să călătoresc prin lume şi să cunosc oameni din diverse ţări, de condiţie şi culturi diferite. Asta face parte din viaţa mea.
Sound System-ul este cea mai veche formă de promovare a muzicii dub şi reggae într-un mod tradiţional. Trebuie să-l păstrăm viu şi să-l respectăm.
Simt nevoia să menţionez că sound system-ul, ca mod lucru, nu se rezumă numai la dans şi ceva distracţie. Aici se face diferenţa între muzică în general şi dub & reggae. Încă odată, ţineţi cont de mesajul pe care-l transmit aceste genuri muzicale.
6. Ştiu că în toamna lui 2012 ai fost cu Webcam Hi-Fi în România, precum şi în alte ţări din Europa. Cum a fost turneul? Ne poţi oferi câteva impresii despre România?
Am fost timp de trei săptămâni în Balcani, unde am susţinut şaisprezece concerte: Slovenia, Ungaria, România, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia, Croaţia. A fost a treia oară când am făcut acest turneu.
Unele show-uri şi sesiuni muzicale precum în Timişoara (România), Sarajevo (Bosnia) sau Zagreb (Croaţia) au fost chiar frumoase. M-am bucurat să-l revăd pe Daniel NRG_D în Veliko Târnovo sau crew-ul Roots Rocket din Sofia, Bulgaria.
Am întâlnit oameni foarte de treabă şi cam toţi îşi dădeau silinţa pentru noi aşa că nu mă pot plânge de ceva, cu toate că uneori au fost momente dificile. Asta-i viaţa! Am cântat alături de cei de la Irie Warriors Sound System pentru prima dată în România. Ei şi-au fabricat propriile boxe. Muzica dub şi reggae de peste hotare. Aceasta s-a extins în toată lumea.
7. Îti place doar muzica dub şi roots reggae? Ce părere ai despre reggae-ul modern?
Da, ascult mai mult dub şi reggae chiar dacă apreciez şi afrobeat, soul, funk sau alte câteva genuri.
Am fost în Jamaica. Îmi place insula aceasta şi consider că este o ţară frumoasă. Sunt oameni cumsecade acolo. Reggae este pretutindeni, oricând, de la rocksteady la dancehall. Veteranii ca Tony Tuff sau Trevor Junior, cu care am lucrat, nu înregistrează multe piese în Kingston. Ei colaborează cu producători europeni sau nord-americani. Unii dintre ei au emigrat în State, cazul lui Carlton Livingston sau înAnglia, precum Earl Sixteen.
În prezent, tinerii jamaicani se orientează către SUA când vine vorba de muzică. Înclină mai mult spre hip hop şi dancehall, cu toate că mai există şi în Jamaica producători de roots tradiţional.
Spre exemplu, Bushman sau Luciano sunt nişte cântăreţi grozavi, cu versuri însufleţite. Ei nu au uitat de unde au plecat. Un alt aspect important îl reprezintă faptul că, în Kingston, este un singur post Irie de radio, iar dacă vrei să devii cunoscut, piesele tale trebuie să fie difuzate pe acest post. Sărăcia şi viaţa grea din ghetou îi determină pe mulţi tineri să-şi dorească obţinerea faimei şi a banilor cu uşurinţă.
Am fost la festivalul Rebel Salute organizat de Tony Rebel. De la ora cinci după-amiaza până la unu noaptea cântă artişti celebri precum Courtney Melody, Horace Andy, Michael Rose; după aceea, până la opt dimineaţa, evenimentul aparţine vedetelor dancehall cum ar fi Vybz Kartel, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer.
De asemenea, este foarte greu să înregistrezi live în Jamaica. Numai câteva studiouri ca Harry J sau Tuff Gong înregistrează live Riddim-uri interpretate de instrumentişti. Acum e mult mai ieftin cu ajutorul unui computer. Din nou, banii sunt un impediment…
8. Crezi că muzica reggae poate transforma lumea într-un loc mai bun?
Bineînţeles că muzica reggae poate face lumea mai bună. Indubitabil, avem nevoie să transmitem acest mesaj de iubire. Este unul dintre cele mai importante lucruri. Muzica reggae nu poate exista fără iubire.
Niciodată nu trebuie să te dai bătut într-o lume a dezordinii şi a războiului, unde mulţi oameni nu-şi cunosc vecinii. Este o lume individualistă şi egoistă, în care doar banii fac legea. Ar trebui să găsim şi alte moduri de viaţă. Unul din ele se bazează pe armonia şi respectul faţă de natură.
Dragostea este soluţia, la fel ca pacea şi educaţia. Fiecare învaţă pe cineva. Muzica reggae nu are graniţe. E incredibil cum o insulă micuţă precum Jamica a dat naştere unei muzici atât de populare şi recunoscute în lumea întreagă. În fiecare colţ al planetei există muzică reggae de bună calitate. Îmi place să călătoresc şi observ că o legătură puternică între oameni este dată şi de muzica reggae.
Este o muzică “trează”. În Africa, oamenii se simt apropiaţi de acest gen muzical. Robert Nesta Marley a fost ca un ambasador care a popularizat genul reggae peste tot în lume. Am un sentiment plăcut când aflu că pretutindeni se ascultă şi se vorbeşte despre reggae.
Puterea muzicii reggae motivează, inspiră şi oferă un sens nou vieţii.
9. Poţi transmite, te rog, un mesaj pentru cititorii site-ului Zona Reggae? 🙂
Un călduros salut pentru Zona Reggae şi Natty Ned. Mulţumiţi lui Dumnezeu pentru inspiraţie şi călăuzire. Recunoştinţă din suflet pentru artiştii, muzicienii şi toţi cei, din întreaga lume, care ne susţin. Respect pentru toţi producătorii, trupele, organizaţiile şi moderatorii radio care au ţinut în viaţă, decenii întregi, muzica roots rock reggae. Dubbing-ul este o necesitate!

1. How was 2012 for Webcam Hi Fi? Was it a good year?
Yes, globally we can’t complain. 2012 was nice fi real. We released our highly acclaimed new album Feeding My Faith, a brand new website too. We played the whole wide world. Some really nice concerts and sessions with Israel Vibration, Digitron Sound System, The Banyans, Bam Salute…
Dub & reggae music is my life.
2. What is special about this genre called ”reggae music”, which makes you dedicate all your life to it?
Reggae music is the only one music with a so strong message.
That’s history : Emperor Haile Selassie, N’Krummah in Ghana, slavery, maroons, ghetto life, poverty, Marcus Garvey, Mortimer Planno, Prophet Gad, Robert Nesta Marley.
From Africa to West Indies. We talk ‘bout foundations. Reggae music is more than entertainment.
This music is dealing with positive atittude and vibration, love, respecting yourself, respecting the others, respecting nature, do it yourself behaviour, independance, consciousness, learning everyday, knowledge, education, sharing, faith, ital food, way of life, fighting against injustice…
Reggae music has always been in my heart even if life is a hard road to travel. It was like an evidence for me. I’ve been so many times to africa, my father worked there for 15 years too. My mother used to say it’s a kind of heridity! I’ve been to Jamaica, Ethiopia…I built myself my house with wood on a hill west south of France, I’ve got my recording studio there, I grow some vegetables, I recover the water from my roof to water the vegetables, heating with wood. Sometimes practicing mountain bike, walking in the forest on the hills, having a dinner with my bredren… I chose this way of life and I like it. It’s a choice.
I sleep tight and I feel in harmony with what I’m saying on the microphone during sound system sessions or when we have discussions with bredren. As I’m not a youth anymore, years after years feeling more confident and realising what you’ve done with your life, been an actor of your life and trying not undergoing it. “Equilibrium” as the veteran UK singer Tena Stelin says in the eponym tune I produced.
Strong rasta roots vibe.
3. How could you become a rastaman? Is it a gift that you receive from your birth?
Day after day as I told you. Our roads crossed. Rasta and I. It’s not a decision I took.
I do no follow some principles. The way I live and rasta living have some common point of view. It’s ‘bout sensibility and spiritualism. Trying to find your own way. Feeling irie when you wake up every morning.
4. Since when did you play? Have you always been perform like WEBCAM HI-FI, or did you belong in your career to other crews and projects?
I’m into music since more than 25 years now. I played with many different bands and was involved in many different projects.
The Clash were like a revelation. At the end of the 70’s beginning of the 80’s in England punk, rock and reggae music were united fighting against racism and social problems. Margaret Thatcher was leading the country. Roots rock reggae music was real as Bob Marley sings it in his song.
Aswad, Steel Pulse, Misty In Roots, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, Ruts DC, Don Letts… The Clash worked with Mickey Dread or Lee Perry.
On the other hand a band called Bad Brains was playing hardcore and reggae music with strong rasta convictions.
I didn’t learn music. I’m a DIY musician and sound engineer.
I’m not a great instrumentist! I know how to play a likkle drums, bass, guitar, percussions, keyboards but my job is sound engineer. I started learning it when I was 18 years old. At this period there were no schools to learn this job.
So I started buying a 4 tracks tape recorder with a couple of microphones… I was the only one to own this equipment in my area ! So I worked a lot to record local bands !
I really love dub & reggae music and in particularly dub as it is a special work for sound engineer. King Jammy, Channel One Studio, Roots Radics, Steven Stanley, Sly & Robbie, Soljie Hamilton, Dennis Bovell, Lloyd Bullwackies Barnes are some of my influences.
But of course too many names to be named! Sound engineers were considered as musicians to build dubs. They used mixing board as an instrument. I follow this way ina traditional style. My work is like a tribute to my favorite period of dub & reggae music between the 70’s and the 80’s. An homage to these people with my personality.
5. During gigs, did you feed with ”people energy”?
Yes meeting massives and sharing my passion is very important. We need feedback and energy.
I like travelling the world and meeting people from different countries with different backgrounds and cultures. It’s part of my life.
Sound system is the oldest way to promote dub & reggae music ina traditional style. We should keep it alive and respect it.
I should mention that sound system is not only about dancing and having some fun. That’s the difference between all kind of music and dub & reggae music. Do no forget the message one more time.
6. I know in the autumn of 2012, you have played in Romania with Webcam Hi-Fi and in other countries from Europe. How was your trip? Could you tell us few impressions about Romania?
We toured the balkans during 3 weeks and 16 shows last autumn: Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia. Third time we were making this tour. Some shows and sessions were really nice like Timisoara, Romania, Sarajevo, Bosnia or Zagreb, Croatia.
Nice to see again Daniel NRG_D in Veliko Tarnovo or Roots Rocket crew from Sofia in Bulgaria. We met some really nice people and generally everybody is making his maximum for us so difficult to complain even if sometimes it was really ruff… That’s life!
We played with Irie Warriors Sound System for the first time in Romania. Dem built their own boxes. Outernational dub & reggae music. Spreading the world.
7. Do you like only dub and roots reggae music? What do you think about the modern reggae?
I mostly listen to dub & reggae music yes even if I apprecilove afrobeat, soul, funk or a few world music.
I went to Jamaica. I like this island it’s a really beautiful country. Really nice people. Reggae is everywhere everytime. From rocksteady to dancehall. Veteran singers like Tony Tuff or Trevor Junior I produced do not record a lot of tunes in Kingston. They work with European or North American producers. Some of dem emigrated to Usa like Carlton Livingston or to UK like Earl Sixteen.
Actually the youths in Jamaica are looking to USA for music. They are more into hip hop and dancehall even if there’s still some cultural rootical producers in Jamaica.
Actually Bushman or Luciano for example are really great singers with conscious lyrics. They do not forget what foundations are. Another important thing is there’s only one radio Irie fm in Kingston and if you want to be popular you should be played by this radio. Poverty and ghetto life make some youths looking for success and easy money.
I’ve been to Rebel Salute festival organised by Tony Rebel and veteran singers play between 5pm to 1 am like Courtney Melody, Horace Andy, Michael Rose and then until 8 am it’s all ‘bout dancehall stars Vybz Kartel, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer…
It’s also very difficult to record some live musicians in Jamaica. Only a few recording studios like Harry J or Tuff Gong record some live Riddims with instrumentists. Nowadays computers make it cheaper. Money is one more time the barrier…
8. Do you believe that reggae music can make this world a better place?
Of course Reggae music can make this world better. We absolutely need this message of love. It’s one of the most important ting. Reggae music can’t exist without this message.
Never give up in this world of disorder and war where a lot of people don’t know their neighbours. It’s a world of individualism and selfishness where only money rules.
We should try to find different way of life. Harmony and respect with nature. Love is the answer as peace and education. Each one teach one.
Reggae music is outernational. It’s amazing how a small island like Jamaica created a so popular music known everywhere in the world. There’s some good reggae music coming from everywhere in the world. I like traveling and I notice that reggae music is a real strong link with everybody. It’s a music with conscious lyrics. In Africa people feel closed to reggae music. Robert Nesta Marley was like an ambassador he popularized reggae everywhere in the world. It’s a nice feeling according to my opinion to talk and hear ‘bout reggae music everywhere in the world.
The power of reggae music. It motivates, inspires, gives life a new meaning.
