Tocmai ce s-a încheiat prima ediţie Subsonic, singurul eveniment de gen dedicat în exclusivitate culturii bass pe plaiuri mioritice, iar prima mea impresie este aceea că am luat parte la cel mai tare festival / party / show din punct de vedere muzical desfăşurat în România până în prezent.

Line-up-ul a fost într-adevăr de cinci stele, aşa cum remarcau şi mulţi dintre artiştii care au luat parte la event. În opinia mea, dacă eşti amator de muzică de gen nu ai cum să ratezi un festival cu Iration Steppas, Bush Chemists sau Dub Phizix pe afiş, pentru a enumera doar trei dintre numele prezente. Trebuie notat şi faptul că sonorizarea a fost de excepţie. Scena Sound System s-a bazat pe două soundsystem-uri legate în linie: cel de 13Kw de la Bababoom HiFi (Italia) și cel de la Irie Warriors Sound System (România), de 10Kw, iar acest lucru l-a făcut chiar şi pe Dougie Wardrop, membru de seamă Bush Chemists, să laude public calitatea sunetului. Au existat şi câteva mici probleme cu acesta, din păcate apărute chiar în timpul concertului Soom T, dar remediate destul de rapid, în maxim zece minute. De atunci şi până când am plecat totul a mers blană 🙂

Atmosfera a fost plăcută, chiar dacă destul de puţini oameni au ales să ia parte la prima ediţie Subsonic. Locul ales pentru desfăşurarea acestui eveniment, Parcul de distracţii din Păuleşti, a arătat destul de bine şi i-a întâmpinat pe iubitorii de muzică bass cu o oază de răcoare.  Timp de trei zile chill-uiala şi veselia au făcut casă bună împreună. Am zărit la faţa locului mulţi oameni frumoşi încărcaţi cu gânduri pozitive.

Înainte de a da startul unui mic rezumat pe zile vreau să-mi arăt aprecierea şi să mulţumesc tuturor artiştilor prezenţi la Subsonic. Totodată, îmi voi cere scuzele de rigoare faţă de cei al căror nume nu-l voi pomeni mai jos, dar pur şi simplu era imposibil să asist la toate show-urile. În principiu, voi povesti ce s-a petrecut mai mult pe la Scena Sound System, locul în care mi-am petrecut majoritatea timpului.

Astfel, ziua I a fost deschisă de Romain Weeding aka Weeding Dub ce i-a încântat pe cei prezenţi cu frumoase pasaje de clavietă aşezate pe ritmuri dub.

A urmat la rând Soom T, aşa cum probabil v-aţi dat seama de-a lungul timpului dacă citiţi Zona Reggae, una dintre preferatele mele. Show-ul a început marcat de câteva dificultăţi tehnice, aşa cum aminteam mai sus, dublate de nemulţumirea logică a lui Soom T care nu putea concepe că trebuie să cânte pe o scenă marcată publicitar cu însemnele coca-cola. Astfel, în momentele în care se făceau eforturi pentru a se remedia sunetul, indiano-scoţianca a ţinut publicului prezent câteva prelegeri legate de efectele nocive pe care le are apa neagră, aşa cum prefer să-i spun eu sucului pomenit mai sus, asupra corpului uman.

Sunetul a revenit şi Soom T a avut până la final o prestaţie excelentă aşa cum de altfel mă şi aşteptam. Am putut asculta piese ca Summer Days, Puff The Police sau Dirty Money, dar şi câteva single-uri noi, unul dintre ele interpretat pe Riddim-ul creat de Stand High Patrol pentru hitul The Big Tree. Din păcate, puţină lume s-a putut bucura de show, probabil mulţi erau încă pe drum spre Păuleşti şi nu au reuşit să prindă concertul planificat pentru vineri la ora 19.15. Finalul acestui live a fost marcat de victoria supremă a lui Soom T asupra coca-cola. Însemnele respective au fost acoperite, cum bine ar fi fost să se întâmple de la început, de mai multe afişe Subsonic, lucru aplaudat la scenă deschisă de  toţi cei prezenţi.

Pe scenă au urcat apoi Dubkasm (hmm, scriind recenzia observ că pe programul oficial numele lor este scris greşit cu z în loc de s la sfârşit) dublaţi de magnificul Solo Banton. Acum, semicercul din faţa scenei era plini de oameni încărcaţi cu vibe pozitiv ce au dansat nebuneşte pe muzica oferită de Dubkasm. Britanicii s-au descurcat de minune, iar intervenţiile lirice ale lui Solo Banton au fost unice şi explozive. Piese ca Walk Like Rasta sau Chalice Haffi Blaze au răsunat în pădurea din Păuleşti şi mai ales în inimile noastre.

Polonia a fost reprezentată şi ea pe scena Subsonic într-un mare stil de către Radikal Guru. Acesta a venit însoţit de către irlandezul Cian Finn, personaj despre care nu cunoşteam foarte multe, dar care mi-a lăsat o impresie bună şi drept urmare îl voi urmări mai atent pe viitor. Mateusz Miller aka Radikal Guru a mixat într-un mare stil şi a incendiat atmosfera. Muzica propusă de el a luat naştere la intersecţia genurilor reggae, dub şi dubstep. Se făceau acum aproape patru sau cinci ore de când dansam încotinuu şi ştiam că vor mai urma multe.

Următoarele trei ceasuri din viaţa mea au fost dedicate în exclusivitate celor de la Bush Chemists, adică lui Dougie ‘Conscious’ Wardrop & Chazbo veniţi însoţiţi din câte am putut să-mi dau seama de Culture Freeman. Chiar şi Cian Finn a revenit la un moment dat pe scenă, unde a rămas alături de băieţi pentru mai mult timp. Nu cred că există suficiente adjective pentru a descrie ce a urmat. A fost pur şi simplu un vibe extraterestrial lansat de boxele din sound systems. Bush Chemists ne-au oferit vineri seara o lecţie de muzică dub mixată în stil britanic ce m-a făcut de foarte multe ori să exclam: IN-CRE-DI-BIL! Abia aştept să-i revăd.

Cam în acest mod s-a terminat ziua pentru mine. Chiar dacă pe scenă urmau Vibration Lab (nu ştiu ce s-a întâmplat cu RSD, nume ce în program era trecut după Bush Chemists), pe care aş fi vrut din tot sufletul să-i ascult, corpul meu a cedat fizic. Am înregistrat multe ore de dansat pe muzică dub ce cu siguranţă m-au antrenat cum se cuvine pentru a putea face parte din armata lui Jah. Deci, spre corturi Kingule 🙂

Debutul celei de-a doua zi a fost marcată de o febră musculară feroce şi de muzica celor de la Tetra Hydro K, la Main Stage (şi aici sper să nu mă înşel) şi de Dawa Hifi la Sound System Stage.

Am aşteptat cu nerăbdare ora 19 pentru a-l putea vedea în premieră şi pe Panda Dub, care odată suit pe scenă, şi nu numai, pare a se contopi cu muzica. Aşa cum românul din public e frate cu codrul şi Panda Dub e frate cu dub-ul, cu stepper-ul britanic, dar şi cu dubstepul.

După o scurtă pauză în care nu ştiu exact pe unde am călătorit, m-am reîntors în jurul orei 23 la Main Stage pentru a-i prinde surprinzător pe Mahom Dub. Spun surprinzător pentru că aceştia au luat locul Shapeshifter în program, ce nu au mai putut ajunge spre dezamăgirea fanilor drum and bass. Neo-zeelandezii reprezentau una dintre cele mai aşteptate trupe de la Subsonic. Din fericire, băieţii de la Mahom s-au descurcat de minune captând atenţia celor prezenţi la Main Stage. Aceştia au demonstrat pe scenă prin muzică aceeaşi prietenie de care au dat dovadă şi ca persoane.

Reîntors la Sound System Stage m-am putut bucura de muzica bass cu mesaj propusă de O.B.F. (cred că de Rico mai exact). A fost şi digital, a fost şi roots, cert e că lumea prezentă dansa cu atâta patos încât se ridicase foarte mult praf în aer. A fost o încâlzire mai mult decât potrivită pentru Iration Steppas, iar O.B.F. reprezintă categoric un nume mare pentru dub-ul anului 2012.

Şi au urmat Iration Steppas, adică Mark Iration însoţit de către Dan Man. Aş putea rezuma prestaţia lor doar la această propoziţie. Oamenii au fost divini şi consider că nu există suficiente cuvinte pentru a descrie cu exactitate ce am simţit sâmbătă seara în timpul show-ului Iration Steppas. Din punct de vedere tehnic, Mark Iration, pe spatele căruia scria bine Vanguard of Dub, propunea întâi originalul Riddim-ului, urmat de două versiuni remixate cu stil ale acestuia pe care îşi făcea simţită prezenţa din când în când şi Dan Man. Întregul lor set a fost wicked, de neratat, legendar, magic spre colosal aş spune 🙂

Ziua a treia a fost dedicată românilor, iar Zona Reggae ţine să-i salute în special pe Irie Warriors, Kaya Foundation, East Roots şi Mighty Boogie.

În continuare puteţi citi alte câteva prime impresii despre Subsonic:

Alte lucruri care ni s-au părut ok la Subsonic: 

– faptul că toţi artiştii au fost prietenoşi şi total abordabili; plus faptul că a existat o permanentă comunicare şi unitate între trupele prezente, cel puţin la dub;
– gogoşile
– preţul acceptabil la bere + long-drinks
– faptul că totul a părut sub control de-a lungul festivalului
– hamacele
– operativitatea omuleţilor ce s-au ocupat de organizarea festivalului situaţi la intrare
– mulţi străini prezenţi la festival; cam o treime, aş aprecia, dintre cei participanţi la event

Lucruri care nu mi-au plăcut la Subsonic: 

– preţul foarte ridicat pentru un 0.3 – 0.4 de apă (5 lei) în condiţiile în care puteai să intri în camping cu doar 2 litri în prima zi a festivalului;
– lipsa locurilor verzi, doar multe frunze uscate şi pământ transformat pe alocuri în praf;
– Scena Sound System îmbrăcată în reclame coca-cola, chiar se putea evita asta, lucru demonstrat ulterior
– foarte puţină lume pentru un festival cu un asemenea line-up
– mâncare destul de scumpa şi destul de proastă
– agenţi de pază bădărani, libidinoşi şi prostuţi

Lucruri de realizat pentru urmatoarea editie Subsonic:

– amplasarea mai multor duşuri
– intrare separată în camping fără reguli gen 2 litri de apă / persoană
– plasarea pe cât posibil a campingului la o distanţă onorabilă faţă de scene. Altfel, e destul de greu să adormi pe ciocanele lui Ogonek la ora şase dimineaţa
– ar fi fost în regulă ca artiştii care au urcat pe cele două scene să fie anunţaţi publicului în prealabil. Sunt sută la sută convins că cel puţin 50% dintre cei prezenţi nu au idee cine era x şi cine era y, având în vedere că programul tipărit a fost dat peste cap şi nu a corespuns cu realitatea

Nu în ultimul rând, Zona Reggae mulţumeşte organizatorilor pentru Subsonic Festival. Cu siguranţă nu a fost uşor nici pentru ei să poată propune publicului român un astfel de fest, drept pentru care merită toate aprecierile noastre. Sperăm din tot sufletul ca în 2013 să putem avea parte de ediţia II Subsonic. Sunt sigur de faptul că multe lucruri vor fi reglate în timp, iar cu multă muncă şi rabdare acest festival va progresa. Începutul a fost mai greu, zilele însorite pentru cultura bass în România nu sunt departe. Un mare big up de asemenea şi pentru cei care au fost prezenţi la acest festival. Fără ei, evenimente de genul acesta nu ar exista în România.

P.S. Legat de absenteismul publicului, remarc încă o dată cu tristeţe, ca şi în cazul concertului Dub Inc din Vama Veche, lipsa multora ce se bat cu pumnul în piept că susţin mişcarea reggae în România. Cum bine zicea un mesaj pe facebook acum câteva luni, adresez şi eu aceeaşi întrebare: mişcarea reggae, unde plm sunteţi?

The first Subsonic edition has just ended, the only event of this kind dedicated exclusively to the bass culture in Romania, and my first impression is that of having been part of the greatest musical festival / party/ show performed in our country so far.

The line-up was for real on a five-star scale, as noted many of the artists that were part of the event. In my opinion, if one’s interested in this kind of music you cannot miss such a festival having Iration Steppas, Bush Chemists or Dub Phizix announced, and these are only three of all the existing names. It is also must noting the fact that the sound engineering was exceptional. The Sound System scene was based on two soundsystems connected in line: the one of 13Kw from Bababoom HiFi (Italy) and the one from Irie Warriors Sound System (Romania), of 10Kw, and this evidence stirred even Dougie Wardrop, honor member of Bush Chemists, to appreciate publicly the quality of the sound. Some small issues with the sound also existed, unluckily appeared quite during Soom T‘s performance, but they were corrected very fast, in maximum 10 minutes. Starting that moment everything went perfectly. 🙂

The atmosphere was pleasant although too few people chose to take part in the first edition of Subsonic. The location chosen for this event to be held, The amusement park in Păuleşti, looked pretty well and welcomed the bass music lovers with an oasis of coolness and freshness. For three days in row the chill-out altmosphere and the joy made a good team. We noticed there a lot of beautiful people full of positive thoughts.

Before starting a short summary of each day I want to show my appreciation and to thank every single artist present at Subsonic. At the same time, here are my apologies to the ones I won’t mention the names, but it was simply impossible to assist to all the shows. Mainly, I will recount what happened especially at the Sound System Scene, the place where I spent most of my time.

Thus, the 1st day was started by Romain Weeding aka Weeding Dub who enchanted the ones present with beautiful pasages of melodica on dub rhythms.

Soom T followed next, one of my favourites, as you probably figured out in the meantime if you read Zona Reggae. The show started marked by some technical difficulties, as mentioned above, doubled by the obvious dissatisfaction of Soom T who couldn’t apprehend she had to sing on a scene having a marked advertisment of coca-cola. Thus in the moments efforts were made to correct the sound, the Indian-Scotish held a lesson to the public about the noxious effects on the human body of the black water, as I like to call this soda mentioned above.

The sound was back and Soom T had an excelent performance until the end of it, as expected. We could listen to tracks like Summer Days, Puff The Police or Dirty Money, but also some new singles, one of them interpreted on the Riddim created by Stand High Patrol for the hit The Big Tree. Unfortunately few people could enjoy the show, they didn’t manage to reach the concert planned for Friday at 19:15. The end of this live performance was marked by the supreme victory of Soom T over coca-cola. Those ads were covered, as it should have happened from the start, by a couple of Subsonic banners, situation applauded by all the present ones in open air.

On scene followed Dubkasm (hmm, writing this review i notice than on the official schedule their name is misspelled) doubled by the magnificent Solo Banton. Now the semicircle in from of the scene was full of people loaded of a positive vibe who danced crazily on the music offered by Dubkasm. The Britishmen handled it greatly, and the lirical interventions of Solo Banton were unique and explosive. Tracks like Walk Like Rasta or Chalice Haffi Blaze echoed in the forest of Păuleşti and especially in our hearts.

Poland was also represented on the Subsonic scene with style by Radikal Guru. He came accompanied by the Irishman Cian Finn, character that I didn’t know too much about, but who made quite a good impression so I’ll take a closer look on him in the future. Mateusz Miller aka Radikal Guru mixed the sounds with a great style and causing a burning atmosphere. The music he proposes was born at the junction of reggae, dub and dubstep. That moment it was almost four or five hours since I was dancing continuously and I knew there were more others to come.

The next three hours of my life were dedicated exclusively to the guys in Bush Chemists, this meaning Dougie ‘Conscious’ Wardrop & Chazbo who came accompanied by Culture Freeman as much as I managed to figure out. Even Cian Finn went back on scene at a particular moment, and stayed with the boys for a while. I don’t think there are enough adjectives to describe what followed next. It was absolutely an extraterestrial vibe initiated by the speakers in the sound systems. Bush Chemists offered us on Friday night a dub musical lesson mixed in the British style who made me very often exclaim : IN-CRE-DI-BLE! I can’t wait to see them again.

So this is in short how the day ended for me. Even if on the scene Vibration Lab were about to come (I don’t know what happened to RSD, name that was scheduled after Bush Chemists), and I really wanted to listen to them with all my heart, my body yielded. I counted many hours of dancing on dub music and they surely trained me right for being able to be part of Jah’s army. So, to the camping King 🙂

The debut of the second day was marked by a terrible muscle soreness and by the the music signed Tetra Hydro K, on the Main Stage (and hopefully I’m not mistaken) and by Dawa Hifi at the Sound System Stage.

I waited anxiously for it to get 19 o’clock so as to see for my first time Panda Dub, who once up on stage, and not only, seemed to be one with the music. As the Romanian in the public is brother with the forest, Panda Dub is brother with the dub, with the british stepper, but also with dubstep.

After a short break when I can’t remember where I travelled to, I was back at the Main Stage around 23 o’clock to surprisingly attend Mahom Dub‘s concert. And I mean surprisingly because they took Shapeshifter‘s place in the schedule, as they couldn’t be here, dissapointing for the drum and bass fans. The New Zealanders were one of the most long-awaited band at Subsonic. Fortunately, the guys in Mahom made it greatly getting the attention of those present at the Main Stage. They proved on scene by the music, the same friendshiphood they show as persons.

Back at the Sound System Stage I could enjoy the message enriched bass music proposed by O.B.F. (I think it was Rico to be more precise). There was digital, there was also roots, the sure thing is that the attendants were dancing so passionately that there was so much dust lifted in the atmosphere. This was a warm-up more than proper before Iration Steppas, and O.B.F. is definitely a big name for the dub of 2012.

So Iration Steppas, followed, meaning Mark Iration accompanied by Dan Man. I could sum up their performance to a single phrase. The dudes were divine and I don’t think there are enough words to describe accurately what I felt on that Saturday night during Iration Steppas. Technically speaking, Mark Iration, who had written on his back Vanguard of Dub, was firtly proposing the original of the Riddim, followed by two versions remixed by him with style and also featuring the alternate presence of Dan Man. Their full set was wicked, worth being there, legendary, magical to the point of colossal I’d say 🙂

The third day was dedicated to the Romanians, and Zona Reggae insists to salute especially Irie Warriors, Kaya Foundation, East Roots and Mighty Boogie.

Other things we found ok at Subsonic:

– the fact that all the artists were friendly and totally approachable; added to the fact that there was a permanent communication and unity between the bands present, at least as far as the dub artists are concerned;
– the donuts
– the acceptable price of beer + long-drinks
– the fact that everything seemed under control during the entire festival;
– the hammocks
– the efficiency of the persons at the entrance who took care of the fix-up of the festival
– a lot of foreigners attending the festival; i’d estimate a third of all the participants at the event

Things i didn’t like at Subsonic:

– the very high price for 0.3 – 0.4 liters of water (5 lei) considering that you could enter the camping with only 2l in the first day of the festival;
– the lack of green places, just a lot of dry leaves and soil transformed intro dust here and there;
– The Sound System Scene was dressed in coca-cola ads, thing that could have been avoided, as it was proved subsequently
– too few people for a festival with such a line-up
– the food was pretty expensive and quite bad
– the guards were churls, lecherous and dumb

Things to be taken into consideration for the next Subsonic edition:

– the setup of more showers
– separate entrance to the camping without rules such as „a single person can only get 2 litres of water” – placing the camping as possible at a respectable distance from the scene. This because it is pretty difficult to fall asleep while listening to the hammers of Ogonek at 6 in the morning
– it would’ve been fine if the artists to be following on the 2 scenes were previously announced to the public. I am surely convinced that at least 50% of the attendants had no idea who x or y were, taking into account that the printed schedule was mixed up and not accurate

Last but not least, Zona Reggae thanks the organizers for the Subsonic Festival. It was surely not easy for them to be able to propose the romanian public such a fest, reason why they deserve all our appreciation. We hope with all our hearts that in 2013 we could be witnesses of the second edition of Subsonic. I am certain that a lot of features will be fixed in tine, and with a lot of work and patience this festival will progress. The start was harder but the sunny days for the bass culture in Romania are not far. A really big up also for the ones present at this festival. Without them there wouldn’t be this kind of events in Romania.

P.S. As for the absence of the public, I remark again sadly, as well as in the case of the Dub Inc concert in Vama Veche, the nonattendance of a lot of persons who beat their breasts for supporting the reggae movement in Romania. As a facebook message a couple of months ago was saying for good, I have the same question: reggae movement in Romania, where the fuck are you?
